The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) finds itself at a crossroads, facing a critical juncture in its journey to attract foreign talent and elevate its standards. This is the perspective offered by Lisa Sthalekar, a former Australian cricket star and current president of the World Cricketers' Association (WCA).
Sthalekar's insights, shared during a recent visit to Mirpur, highlight the BPL's current standing in the global T20 landscape. The league, she notes, lags behind in terms of overall appeal, as evidenced by its low ranking in the WCA's assessment of T20 tournaments. This assessment, based on metrics developed in collaboration with players, agents, and associations, places the BPL at the bottom of the list, with just 22.6 points. In contrast, The Hundred leads with 75.2 points, while the IPL and SA20 occupy the third and second spots, respectively.
"The WCA's assessment is a comprehensive tool designed to guide players, administrators, and agents in their decision-making processes. It's a traffic-light system, and unfortunately, the BPL's light isn't showing much green," Sthalekar explained. She urged the newly formed Cricket Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) to collaborate with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to address the issues and create an environment that encourages foreign participation.
One of the key challenges the BPL faces is its reputation for non-payment and fixing issues. Sthalekar believes that resolving these disputes is essential for the league's growth and improvement. "Professional cricketers rely on their sport for their livelihood. Just like any other job, they expect to be paid for their services. The CWAB has a crucial role to play in ensuring that the BPL honors its commitments and provides a secure environment for players," she added.
The WCA, Sthalekar clarified, operates primarily at the international level, assisting players during ICC events. However, she expressed enthusiasm about CWAB president Mithun's upcoming visit to London for a board meeting, believing it will offer him valuable insights into players' associations and their global initiatives.

"They're learning the ropes, understanding the role of a players' association, and finding their voice as representatives of Bangladesh's professional cricketers. It's a challenging task, but they're committed to making a positive impact," she said.
